On Saturday morning Fort Loramie played host to multiple teams in a scrimmage that included Rossford, Lima Shawnee, Toledo Central Catholic, Lakota East, and the host school. Playing 10 minute running-clock period rotations, the morning was filled with quality competition and talent. Here is who stood out:
2023 PG Michael Greenlee (Toledo Central Catholic) – In his first season since transferring over from St. John’s, Greenlee looks ready and able to take the keys to the Central Catholic program from the lead guard position. He made good decisions with the basketball throughout the day, playing within himself and not turning the ball over. Knocked down open looks from the outside, while displaying a nice floater and ability to score it over bigs in the paint. Gets after it on the defensive side of the floor, utilizes his quickness and anticipation to create turnovers. Really sound showing from him.
2023 C Derek Vorst (Rossford) – The young big man continues to grow and develop. Displayed improved footwork, pulled down rebounds and was very strong with the basketball. Capable of finishing through contact, becoming more comfortable scoring with his back to the basket. Held his ground in the paint defensively, bodies up well, and didn’t commit bad fouls. Has to be near the top of the list for his position in his class in all of Northwest Ohio.
2021 G/F George Mangas (Lima Shawnee) – Looked like his usual self, impacting plays all over the floor, always being around the ball, and playing with great efficiency. Doesn’t force things, scored it off the bounce and the catch, displayed that quick release from the outside. Ran the floor well for easy ones. Was involved in multiple turnover creating plays on defense, using his smarts and length. Better athlete than he probably gets credit for. Steady, and able to get you a bucket as needed. Can’t argue that he is the top available senior in Northwest Ohio.
2023 F Jake Morrison (Rossford) – Young, but plays within his abilities. Looks to have room to grow a few more inches in the near future. Shot the ball really well from the perimeter. Should continue to develop and has a bright future ahead of him. Will contribute to a very talented Rossford team this season.
2023 C Ja’Vaughn Jones (Toledo Central Catholic) – Has slimmed down over the past year, but is still a load for opponents in the paint. Finished around the rim with consistency, doing so through contact at times. Fought for rebounds, and ran the floor well. Capable of handling the basketball a bit. Will play a critical role for his team this season, and will have the opportunity to show why he has such potential and upside.
2021 PG Cam’Ron Gaston (Rossford) – Recently nicked up by an injury, Gaston was missing some of that flash and explosiveness you become accustomed to seeing from him. With that in mind, he still displayed the qualities that make him a high-quality point guard. Keeps his head up, always seeing the floor, assisted on multiple scores in transition. Crafty when he gets around the rim, continuing to improve defensively. Should have a strong senior season on the horizon.
Others who stood out: Chico Johnson (Toledo Central Catholic), Ben Morrison (Rossford), Jarin Bertke (Lima Shawnee).
