On Friday night at Waite High School, Start and Bowsher hit the court to see who would be this season’s champion of Toledo’s City League. While the game got interesting late and ultimately came down to the final seconds, it was Start who was in control from start to finish, earning the championship crown.
Start would begin this game playing with great energy and discipline, sharing the ball and making all the hustle plays. They would get numerous contributions early, but senior point guard Devin Williams would lead the way throughout the night for the Spartans. They would lead Bowsher 13-9 after the 1st quarter.
The second quarter would be all Start, as they opened up this game and reach their biggest margin going into the half. Junior guard Adrian Michael would get going offensively, with the aforementioned Williams continuing to lead his team, and they would hold a 31-14 advantage over Bowsher at the half.
Bowsher would finally begin to play their brand of basketball that they’ve shown all year, applying defensive pressure, flying all over the floor, and getting out into transition. Doing these things, the Rebels were able to slowly begin to creep back into the game. Senior guards Damion Washington and Terrance Williams would lead the way offensively, and they would trail 27-39 after the 3rd quarter.
The early part of the final quarter of play would be a defensive struggle as both teams were unable to get the offense working. That would soon break, as Bowsher would make a final push to make this game interesting. Junior guard Lamar Skipper stepped up in a big way on both ends of the floor, and the defensive pressure from Bowsher began to cause big problems for Start. Skipper, along with Washington and Williams would get Bowsher to within a point, with less than one minute remaining. However, Start’s Adrian Michael would knock down numerous clutch free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory for Start. They would defeat Bowsher by a final score of 52-48 to claim the Toledo City League Championship.
Start was led by Devin Williams with 15 points, followed by Adrian Michael with 13 points. Bowsher would be led by Lamar Skipper with 12 points, and Damion Washington with 11 points in the loss.
