Crestview Defeats Kalida

On Friday night Kalida traveled to Convoy to face a Crestview team that is highly regarded as one of the most talented and skilled teams in small school basketball in the entire state of Ohio. In a game that featured two of the more successful programs in Northwest Ohio throughout the past decades, it was Crestview who would pick up the victory in front of a packed gymnasium.

Crestview got out to a quick start to open the game however Kalida did a nice job defending the post and in particular the Etzler brothers (Javin and Kalen) of Crestview and the length that they pose. Kalida was able to stay patient on the offensive end and mix defenses, but a late push and scoring from Crestview’s Javin Etzler would give them a 15-7 lead over Kalida at the end of the 1st quarter.

In the 2nd quarter Kalida would slow down the pace of play and really force Crestview into some difficult shots, while sharing the ball and getting points in the paint on offense. This combined to allow Kalida to make a late push in the quarter to only trail Crestview 20-23 at the halftime break.

While Kalida did a nice job of quieting the 6’8″ presence of Crestview’s Kalen Etzler for much of this game, he got loose in the 3rd quarter, scoring around the basket and off the bounce, totaling 7 points, and helping Crestview grow their lead to 35-28 after the 3rd.

Crestview senior guard Derick Dealey would get hot from the perimeter, knocking down multiple triples, and really put the game out of reach for Kalida in the final quarter, as Kalida struggled to find answers on the offensive end. Crestview would defeat Kalida by a final score of 52-38.

Crestview was led by Derick Dealey and his 16 points, followed by Javin Etzler with 9 points, and Kalen Etzler with 7 points in the win.
