The University of Toledo’s Savage Arena played host to a pair of DI District Semifinal games on both Wednesday and Thursday night. On Wednesday evening, Toledo St. Johns took on Toledo Central Catholic, while the second game featured Anthony Wayne vs. Lima Senior.
St. Johns was firing on all cylinders in their game against Central Catholic, as the dynamic duo of Houston King and Vince Williams went to work, with each putting together spectacular performances. The duo alone outscored Central Catholic, as Williams went for 23 points, with King right behind with 22 points on the night. Central Catholic’s young backcourt of Jonzell Norrils and Cameron Awls did some nice things, and combined to make the second quarter of this one interesting, however their efforts would not be enough. St. Johns would defeat Central Catholic by a final score of 64-32.
In the second game on Wednesday night Anthony Wayne and Lima Senior went at it in what promised to be a close, back and forth affair. The game would live up to those expectations in a low scoring contest, with each team going on many runs throughout the game, but none enough to put the game away. Lima Senior would be paced by BJ Miller in the first half, with big man Jatsiel Colon getting involved in the second half. However, Anthony Wayne’s tough defensive efforts, and their ability to knock down free throws would make the difference in this one. Max Bradfield in particular would hit some clutch foul shots down the stretch, and Anthony Wayne would defeat Lima Senior 56-51.
On Thursday night the 3rd episode of the Battle of Sylvania took place, with Sylvania Southview and Sylvania Northview squaring off. This one would get off to a fast paced game early on with Southview junior Tehree Horn going to work, with 9 points in the first quarter. Northview junior guard Alek West would get things going and make plays to keep it close throughout the first half. Christian Wagenhauser and Colton Snow would be a fun matchup to watch throughout the night in the paint as they went back and forth all night long. In the second half West would continue to lead the charge for Northview, with Ryan Fries getting involved for Southview. Shot making from either side was a struggle, however Southview would get enough to fall and ultimately win and advance. Sylvania Southview would defeat Sylvania Northview 51-40.
In the second game on Thursday, Toledo St. Francis and Whitmer went at it for the 3rd time this season. This game would be an offensive struggle all night long, with easy buckets and runs coming at a premium. St. Francis would get a great effort from senior guard Tayler McNeal, while Eddie Colbert would balance things out for Whitmer. Trey Syroka would get a critical pair of buckets late in the game to give Whitmer the advantage they needed and they would hold on to advance. Whitmer would defeat Toledo St. Francis 40-36.
Toledo St. Johns and Anthony Wayne play at 2:00 on Saturday in the District Final, while Sylvania Southview plays Whitmer at 7:00 in the other District Final. Both games are once again at Savage Arena.
