On Tuesday night Genoa traveled to Otsego for a key matchup in the Northern Buckeye Conference as we head down the final stretch of the regular season.
To begin the game Otsego got tremendous shooting of the basketball from senior guard Will Varner who buried three triples on consecutive trips down the floor to get a quick 9-0 lead. Genoa would answer with buckets from juniors Jacob Plantz and Andrew Bench, two of the better talents in the area. Bench would pick up his second foul late in the 1st quarter however, and Otsego would lead Genoa 12-9 after the 1st.
Bench would miss the entire 2nd quarter for Genoa in foul trouble and Genoa would struggle to score the ball. At the same time Otsego would go cold from the floor as well, in large part to the defense of Genoa. Otsego would still cling to a 19-17 lead at the halftime break.
Genoa would pick up the intensity on both ends to begin the second half in large part because of the return of Andrew Bench to the floor. He and Plantz would own the paint throughout the quarter, and some strong perimeter defense would continue to cause cold shooting from the outside by Otsego. Genoa would lead Otsego 31-22 after the 3rd quarter.
The 4th and final quarter would be more of the talented duo of Plantz and Bench. While Plantz didn’t shoot the ball particularly well on this night his activity and ability to remain engaged and involved would pay off for he and his teammates. The closing minutes would be all Genoa and they would go on to defeat Otsego 45-25.
Genoa would be led by Jacob Plantz with 20 points, followed by Andrew Bench with 14 points.
